Terms of the Day for September 5

  • The Gaze - a psychoanalytical term that describes the anxious state that comes with the awareness that one can be viewed as an object.
  • The Male Gaze – a type of gaze which occurs when an artist puts the viewer into the perspective of a heterosexual man by representing women as an erotic object to be observed.
  • Neoplantonism – a Renaissance philosophy which attempted to reconcile the philosophies of the ancient Greek philosophers Socrates & Plato, and prophecies told by ancient Greek sibyls, with Christianity.  One of its tenants was the metaphoric relationship of the beauty of women with nature and spirituality.

Terms of the Day for September 3

  • Renaissance - literally translated “rebirth” - the period of European history in which the rediscovery of classical Greek art, philosophy, and science led to renewed interest in an intense study of the world and the limitless potential of individual human beings.
  • Humanism - a philosophy which encompasses a wide range of ethical stances that attach importance to human dignity, concerns, and capabilities, particularly rationality.
  • Republic – a form of government in which power resides in the people and the government is ruled by elected leaders run according to established law rather than inherited or appointed (such as through inheritance or divine mandate).
  • Guilds – organizations that controlled the training in trade specialties as well as the prices for work done.  Aspiring artists learned the trade as apprentices in the workshop of a certified master. 
  • Linear Perspective - A form of perspective in drawing and painting in which parallel lines are represented as converging so as to give the illusion of depth and distance.
